Lael Whitehead

Lael Whitehead grew up in Vancouver, in a family that encouraged creativity and independent thinking. In her teens she studied piano and voice, taught herself guitar, flute and percussion, and began writing songs. She studied English and Philosophy at UBC and The University of Washington, eventually earning a Masters degree. While pursuing academic studies, Lael was always actively involved in music. She sang with chamber choirs at UBC and UW and then later joined the award-winning Elektra Women's Choir in Vancouver.

In 1998, Lael moved with her family to Mayne Island where they live on a sheep farm at the edge of the ocean. In this wild, coastal setting, Lael has been exploring various forms of earth-based spirituality, finding inspiration in many traditions from Wicca to Buddhism. She is a founding member of the band, Jaiya, whose music celebrates our connection with the earth.

Lael also performs with the Early Music Folk Ensemble, Banquo, based in Victoria, BC.

THE BALANCE OF THE WORLD IS IN DANGER.

Kaya Stormchild, an orphan, lives alone on a wild island in the Salish Sea. Well, not quite alone. She has a Grandmother, a stately bald eagle, and Tike, a feisty young otter, for company. And she has just made a new friend; a boy, named Josh, from a nearby island.

Life is pleasant and peaceful until one day Kaya learns that her eagle friends are being killed by a pair of evil bounty hunters. To make matters worse, the magical Omrith has gone missing! Without the Omrith, the ancient mystical rites of the Salish Sea cannot take place.

Will Kaya be able to stop the criminals? Will she and her friends discover what has become of the Omrith? The fate of all the folk of the Salish Sea rests in her hands.

Set in a Canadian landscape evocative of British Columbia's southern coast, Kaya Stormchild is a gripping adventure story imbued with an earth-centred spirituality.
